ADVICE | Tips For Anxious Flyers

Do you struggle with flying and feeling anxious before going on holiday? Hopefully my tips will help you feel a little more at ease..

I love going on holiday, just like most of you reading this I can imagine, but getting on that plane can be tough. I don’t use the word anxious too often, but I do feel quite panicky and scared before hopping on a plane to my destination of choice.

I’ve become a lot better at travelling now I’m a bit older, but I do still get that tight feeling in my chest and wave of nausea for a few days before I know that I have to go to an airport and get on a flight (and also when I arrive at the airport). There are a few things that I do to help ease my mind and I wanted to share a few tips with those of you who also struggle with travelling.

Reading

Obviously if you don’t enjoy reading, then skip over this one! I don’t read as often as I should, but whenever I do I always feel the most relaxed version of myself. Which is why I enjoy reading whilst travelling, as the only thing I’m concentrating on is the story that I’m reading – you can submerge yourself into the book and sometimes even forget that you’re on a plane (as long as you have headphones in to drown out the sound of the jets..).

Playing Games

I’m an absolute sucker for getting obsessed with playing games on my phone, so I always make sure that I have enough games downloaded on my phone or iPad to play whilst I’m on my flight. You could also take playing cards or a small board game.

Wearing Comfy Slippers

There’s nothing worse than wearing ‘normal’ clothes and shoes on a plane, am I right? I usually take my shoes off and get as comfortable as possible, so I then feel more relaxed. Taking some slippers or slipper socks will help to make you feel like you’re somewhere familiar and comfortable, as we associate slippers with being at home. So sliding on a pair always helps!

Listening to Music

I don’t think there’s many of us who don’t listen to music whilst we’re travelling and I think we can all agree that listening to music always makes us feel soo much better and more at ease. Make sure you have a few playlists to hand and submerge yourself into your own little musical world.

Writing Blog Posts

This point will only apply to those with a blog, but if you take your laptop, iPad/tablet, phone or even a trusty old book and pen, you can get lost with writing various blog posts. I love getting lost within a blog post I’m writing and I always find that concentrating on one thing like this makes me forget that I even feel anxious.

Remembering the End Goal

I always try and remember why I’m on this plane and how lucky I am to be able to visit the place I am visiting. There are lots and lots of people out there who don’t get the opportunity to go on holiday, so feeling grateful for it can also help you to put things into perspective and stop feeling anxious for a while. Always remember that you’re going somewhere you’ve longed to go and this little bit in between will be soo insignificant when you arrive the other side. Remember – YOU GOT THIS!
