How To Establish A More Eco Friendly Kitchen

Switching up your diet to focus on more plant based, local foods is a great way to be more kind to the planet. Most foods will have an origin or production location on the packaging, so you can see how far it’s travelled to get to you. Plant based foods take far less water to harvest, whilst creating far less waste. If you still want to eat meat then it’s best to opt for outdoor bred options, whilst fish should always be line caught to maximise sustainability. 

 

Change Your Equipment 

The equipment that you use inside your kitchen can also contribute towards your carbon footprint, as there are certain materials and production methods that damage the environment. Any non-recyclable plastics should be substituted where possible, as these items will take hundreds of years to break down into microplastics, eventually polluting oceans, rivers and other essential habitats and ecosystems. You can find many different alternative options that replace your old single use plastic products, from sustainably made Hippo bottles to house water on the go, to reusable wax based food wraps that work like cling film. Opting for wooden utensils over hard plastic can also be of benefit, as they can degrade in a much shorter time.
